August 24th, 2019 was a special celebration I’ll never forget. It was Chase and Jared’s 34th birthdays! Chase and Jared are twins, however, after losing a battle with an undiagnosed illness earlier this year, Chase celebrated his birthday in heaven. Missing him dearly, but still wanting to celebrate, the family held a large celebration for their birthdays with food, cake and a bouncy obstacle course for the kids. Wanting to celebrate Chase’s life, they also had 2 special releases in honor of Chase, dove shaped balloons and lanterns later in the evening.
There were so many great moments during the day, but one stood out to me the most. When I was taking their family portraits, the sun kept hitting my lens and created a glare. I tried to make it go away but eventually gave up. When I got home that night I discovered that there was a rainbow right on the edge of the image where Chase could have been standing. When I saw this I broke down and cried. I cried because of how perfect it was and that deep down I knew this was Chase’s way of “showing up”.
Donating my time and skill for special occasions like this is what reminds me how fragile life is how much photography still means. It’s the best way I can help others with the gift God gave me. I also received the sweetest card from this family and it’s now pinned to my cork board beside my desk. It’s the little things in life that mean the most.
